Webb, the founder of Varsity Spirit and one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport, died on Thursday following an accident. He was widely regarded as a driving force behind the evolution of modern cheerleading.
Details surrounding the accident have not yet been publicly released, but news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the cheer community and beyond.
Jeff Webb’s impact on cheerleading is unparalleled. Beginning his journey as a yell leader at the University of Oklahoma, he quickly became involved in the industry through his work with the National Cheerleaders Association. His passion and forward-thinking vision led him to establish the Universal Cheerleading Association and, in 1974, Varsity Spirit—a company that would grow into the largest organization in the cheerleading world.
Under Webb’s leadership, Varsity Spirit expanded into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise encompassing competitions, training camps, apparel, and media. His efforts helped transform cheerleading from a sideline activity into a highly competitive, year-round sport featuring elite athleticism and global participation.
Through Varsity Brands, the broader organization that evolved from his original venture, Webb helped build a massive sports enterprise with thousands of employees and a worldwide presence. His influence extended internationally as well. As president of the International Cheer Union, he played a key role in organizing national federations and advocating for the sport’s recognition on the Olympic stage.
Webb’s legacy is deeply embedded in the structure of modern cheerleading—from the rise of televised competitions to the development of advanced skills and training systems. Generations of athletes, coaches, and gym owners have been shaped by his work.
As the community reflects on his life, Jeff Webb will be remembered as a visionary leader whose passion and innovation forever changed the sport.
